Overview

The Emirates ID is the official identity card of the UAE. Every resident must hold one, and it is issued together with your residence permit. It is now the main proof of residence, in place of the visa sticker in your passport.

Authority

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP). In Dubai, residence applications go through GDRFA, and the Emirates ID is issued by ICP.

Who can apply

Anyone becoming a UAE resident: employees, investors, Golden Visa holders and family members sponsored by a resident.

Required documents

  • Passport valid for at least six months
  • Entry permit or residence application
  • A recent photo that meets ICP's standards
  • Medical fitness certificate (for residents aged 18 and over)

Fees

The fee depends on how long the card is valid, which follows your residence. ICP publishes the current amounts, and they are usually included in the residence application.

Steps

  1. Enter the UAE on your entry permit.
  2. Take the medical fitness test.
  3. Submit the Emirates ID application with your residence application, usually through your sponsor or a typing centre.
  4. Give your fingerprints and photo at an ICP service centre when asked.
  5. Collect the card or receive it by courier.

Processing time

Usually within a few working days to two weeks after biometrics.
